Poco A Poco is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Bangkok. Unfortunately, it will be closing at the end of June. The following can’t be stressed enough. You should absolutely go out of your way to eat here while there is still time. You won’t be disappointed.
There are so many reasons I love Poco A Poco but it all starts with Shinichi Fukazawa, the Owner and Chef. He went above and beyond to create a place that is authentic. It’s a genuine eatery that feels very welcoming. There is something cozy about the design and décor of the restaurant that is clearly reflection of the owner.
Of course, there is a lot more to this place than a nice ambiance. Poco A Poco is a Japanese-style, Western restaurant. If you have ever been to Japan, you know exactly what this is. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the concept, it features dishes from Italy, Spain and elsewhere in Europe with some Japanese touches.
There is everything from pasta and tapas to curry and hamburger steak. One thing about the menu at Poco A Poco is that it is always changing. Chef Fukazawa likes to try new things or add different dishes. For example, he started doing gyoza a while back just because he liked it and wanted to offer it. The dumplings were amazing by the way.
It’s really that informal spirit which makes Poco A Poco such a fantastic restaurant. So many eateries in Bangkok focus on being perfect to the point where it borders on pretentiousness. That’s not the case here. Chef Fukazawa is passionate about his craft, but doesn’t take things too seriously. It is simply great food in a relaxed environment.
Speaking of the food, it’s awesome. You can’t go wrong with any of the pasta dishes although my favorite main course is the signature curry. It’s so simple and yet so delicious. However, two things I like the most are totally out of left field.
First, the Poco A Poco tiramisu is the best. Not just on Ekkamai or in Bangkok. This is the best tiramisu in the world. I’ve been to Italy and I’ve eaten at lots of Italian restaurants. No tiramisu can match the one served here.
Second, Poco A Poco has this homemade coke drink that I love. There is no way for me to explain it. Just go and order it. If you don’t like it, I’ll personally reimburse you.
It’s quite sad to see Poco A Poco close after two-and-a-half years. Ekkamai has a lot of good restaurants but there was nothing like this one. Chef Fukazawa really tried his best during these difficult times. I even remember seeing him personally deliver orders on his motorbike.
I think I speak for all of his customers when I say arigato gozaimasu! We will all truly miss Poco A Poco. And if you have never been, do yourself a favor and go before it is too late.
