Singapore Changi Airport Review

What’s tolerable:

  1. Very organized
  2. Never feels busy
  3. Good transport options

On the downside:

  1. Mediocre food options
  2. Getting from point A to point B can be a trek
  3. I don’t get “it”

There seems to be this massive conspiracy involving Singapore Changi Airport. You’ve probably read countless articles proclaiming it to be the best thing since sliced bread. Especially after the opening of the USD1.2 billion The Jewel which the New York Times called an airport mall on steroids.

It is a good airport, but not one that deserves all the praise it gets on a regular basis. It’s certainly no Haneda. That much is for sure.

Let’s start with all of those “comforts” that sound nice when you read about them but are quite different in reality. The comfortable chairs, multimedia stations and entertainment areas sound nice until you get there and can’t find any space. Even if you do, someone nearby is snoring so loudly that you’ll probably want to leave immediately.

The gardens and decorations are nice, but they’ll only kill a few minutes. You’re likely to have an hour and half before your flight leaves. And it could be a lot more if you’re transferring. What’s next? Well, not a lot. The number of dining options is average in all the terminals.

Oh look, a garden in an airport. This will kill a couple of minutes

If you’re transiting, you might be in for a bit of a trek. Things are kind of spread out so you might burn a few minutes and calories getting from point A to point B. Singapore Changi Airport never feels all that busy and lines are minimal. That’s always a bonus.

At the end of the day, Singapore Changi Airport is a nice airport that’s also forgettable in the scheme of things. It is easy to get to, clean and well organized which you can say about almost everything in Singapore. Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes I wonder if this place is the same airport all those travel bloggers are fawning over.

Interesting Tip: It’s Singapore. Everything is clearly laid out for you. Just show up on time and you’ll be fine.
