Tsunami Village Review
Location: Penang, Malaysia
What’s tolerable:
- Brilliant food
- Interesting view
- Fair prices
On the downside:
- Only outdoor seating
- Blink and you miss it location
Here’s the deal with Tsunami Village, I really like the food despite not liking a bunch of other things about it. I don’t mind this place despite the fact you have to sit outside, it kind of smells and it’s a pain in the ass to get to.
I’ve been to Tsunami Village a few times now and everything was nothing short of amazing. I mean apart from the rice. Rice is rice. But the seafood is so damn great. The prawns are a delight and the steamed fish is spectacular. You can pick a bunch of different ways you want it prepared so there are no concerns about finding a flavor you like.
I think the prices are reasonable for Penang, but some jerks online will probably disagree with that. I haven’t found anything significantly cheaper than Tsunami Village, but I have stumbled upon much worse quality.
Getting to the place can be an adventure if you don’t know where you’re going. There is a sign on the road, but you actually have to walk though this area that looks more like an auto mechanic’s shop and less like a restaurant. Your best bet is to just catch a Grab. You may be able to catch a bus if you’re feeling adventurous.
Also, the restaurant is right next to the sea with the Floating Mosque in view. It’s not a bad place during dusk, but you won’t be seeing any sunsets. That’s because Tsunami Village faces north.
Interesting Tip: Steamed fish. Order it. My favorite is the red snapper. Finally, don’t get lost trying to find Tsunami Village. If someone is outside repairing a motorbike tire, you’re at the right place.
