Ramen on Ekkamai with a twist: Tsukemen Jo

You’ve had ramen before. But probably not tsukemen. It’s kind of like ramen, but instead of the noodles being served in a hot soup, they are served separately. And the broth like brown gravy that is stronger than tonkotsu or miso soups most ramen is served in. It’s kind of weird at first, but tsukemen is actually pretty good.

If you are looking for a ramen shop on Ekkamai that serves tsukemen, the aptly name Tsukemen Jo is the place to go. It’s basically under the Ekkamai BTS station in between Bangkok Mediaplex and Bangkok Eastern Terminal Bus Station. There is also a massive sign that you may have seen from the skytrain platform.

Tsukemen Jo isn’t winning any beauty pageants. You won’t be snapping photos for your Instagram here. It is very much a place where you go in, eat ramen and leave. And that’s actually something you may appreciate.

Tsukemen Jo isn’t pretty, but it does offer unique ramen on Ekkamai

Those that have visited Japan will be very familiar with the concept. The country is full of those small-ish ramen restaurants that don’t look like much but serve good food. Tsukemen Jo captures that spirit. There are no frills.

However, there is no ramen shop on Ekkamai quite like it. Japan and, apparently, Los Angeles are the only places tsukemen is popular, but I’ve been to both and never saw it. To have it on Soi 63 is pretty cool.

There are actually a few Tsukemen Jo locations in Thailand. The first one was opened in Sri Racha in 2014 followed by the Ekkamai branch in 2014 and then Asoke and Hua Hin shops. That being said, this is definitely not your typical chain ramen eatery.

I haven’t talked a lot about the tsukemen and that’s because it is just one of those things you really need to try. If you’re craving ramen and happen to be on Ekkamai, Tsukemen Jo is worth a visit.

If you’re going to Tsukemen Jo, get one of the signature dishes

If you go and don’t order the tsukemen or the jo, which is a fish-based, brown sauce, you are dumb.

Price

Tsukemen Jo is not cheap, but the portions are large. You’re looking at THB250-THB300 for a bowl with chasu or ebi. For an extra THB70, you can get a combo that comes with a drink and a side dish of your choice.

Getting there

Just go to the Ekkamai BTS station and look for the 7-11 next to the bus station. From there, walk towards Gateway Ekkamai. If you can’t find it from here, I can’t really help you. Here’s a map anyway.
