Hotel Mercure Penang Beach Review
Location: Penang, Malaysia
What’s tolerable:
- Staff was super helpful
- Sea view room is okay
On the downside:
- Can’t hide the age
- Beach is a dud
- Nothing around
The Hotel Mercure Penang Beach was formerly known as the Four Points By Sheraton Penang and before that it was some non-branded hotel along Tanjung Bungah Beach. Regardless of what it’s called, the hotel suffers from a non-descript location and no real redeeming qualities.
The most recent rebrand has brought with it new carpets and the like, but the hotel still kind feels old. Also, the hallway and elevator smelled like booty. I don’t why it smelled like booty, but it was that way for a good solid 24 hours. If you don’t want to know what booty smells, don’t go into the elevator here.
Hotel Mercure Penang Beach doesn’t have much around it unless you feel like a bit of walking. The beach itself is there, but it’s not really a great place for swimming. There is a pool on-site should you want to lay out in the sun.
I do have to give props to the staff who were very accommodating. They helped us get to where we wanted to go and had good answers to all of our questions including where to eat. The rooms with a sea view are nice, but everything else sort of looks out onto the street which is a bummer.
There are plenty of hotels to stay in Penang so it’s hard to recommend this one unless the price was drastically reduced. Even then, I would probably need to be talked into staying here again. That smell, man.
Interesting Tip: The breakfast restaurant is a miss. The buffet is very average. You can find better, cheaper options in Georgetown.
